The People’s Bank of China and the March 2017 issue of the ZTE Technology Review served as the source material from which the 22 tech, telecom, and finance terms were gathered. The terminology remains quite niche orientated and not part of one’s everyday Chinese vocabulary unless one is a banker, a computer scientist, an economist, or an engineer.

Word in Use
This blog’s entry is a little different from previous Word in Use sections. Below you’ll see two official government versions of the same text. The “translation” work here is to see the difference of what appears as natural to native speakers.
- 前不久,中新宣布启动双边自贸协定升级谈判,又刷新了“第一”的记录,在当前世界经济复苏依然乏力、保护主义抬头、逆全球化寒流涌动的背景下,这不仅对双方是一项重大利好,也向世界发出了维护贸易和投资自由化便利化的积极信号。
- The recent announcement to launch negotiations on upgrading our FTA has added yet another record to the long list of our ground-breaking co-operation.
This is great news not just for our countries, but also sends a positive signal of support for trade and investment liberalisation and facilitation, especially in the context of weak global economic recovery, rising protectionism and bitter backlash against globalisation.
- official translation as it appeared in the New Zealand Herald, 27 March 2017
- 又刷新了“第一”的记录 more directly translates as “refresh our record of firsts.” The “record of first” became “ground-breaking list” and “refresh” became “added another.” Given that one can refresh a list by adding another item to a list, the officialese makes some sense.
- 也向世界发出了维护贸易和投资自由化便利化的积极信号
The signal of support for trade and investment liberalisation and facilitation comes out of a signal (信号) to maintain (维护) trade and investment (贸易和投资) liberalisation and facilitation (自由化便利化). The 也向世界发出了 (Also, sends to the world) was dropped from the official translation. An alternative translation could be “but, also, signals to the world a positive signal to maintain and facilitate the liberalisation of trade and investment.”
保护主义 = protectionism = bǎohù zhǔyì

- 僧刑八幡神 日本历史上,对八幡神的信仰园流长,赤根中央集权统治密切相关;他代表了各种神秘力重,给予人民庇护和祝福。在奈良,京都和;镰仓都有供奉八幡神的重要神社。
- Sogyo Hachiman Throughout Japanese history, the cult of Hachiman had a unique relationship to centers of government, with important shrines in Nara, Kyoto, and Kamakura. The deity was invoked as a source of protection and blessing by various powerful and contending forces.
