For the fortnight between 25 April 2016 and 6 May 2016 I extracted 10 Chinese Language Technology and Telecommunications terms from 6 Huawei press releases for the purpose of building up vocabulary knowledge in these jargon rich domains.

Notes

• 库 is a software library, which is very different from 图书馆，a library of the physical sort. If you code, you know the difference. Think”#include <filename.h>”.
  The C standard library provides macros, type definitions and functions for tasks such as string handling, mathematical computations, input/output processing, memory management, and several other operating system services.
• 网路 and 网络 both mean network. In Taiwan 网路 means Internet, which is 网络 in the rest of the PRC per a dictionary in Pleco. One reasonable explanation, I’ve encountered is 网路  means any sub-network/intranet and 网络  means the whole network/Internet.
• The last 3 terms of the main terminology were pulled from a single Huawei press release (English| Chinese) with a graphic for easy translation of several terms.

5 Chinese Technology and Finance Terms from the News (18-22 April 2016)

In order to collect 5 Chinese language Technology, Finance, and Telecommunications terms the press releases issued between 18 April and 22 April 2016 of

• CHT, a Taiwanese telecommunications services provider
• the Financial Supervisory Committee of the Republic of China, a regulator and
• ZTE, a Shenzhen-based network equipment provider

were searched. I found 2 finance terms and 3 technology jargon terms. The English language equivalents have all nearly become mainstream terms instead of being consigned to the fringes of niche domains.

6 of the 14 Hanzi in the Main Terminology have variations between their Simplified and Traditional constructions.

Notes

• The translation of a listed company as 上市公司 makes sense as the literal translation would be on-the-market-company. Which the makes me wonder the over-the-counter traded companies are traded on in Chinese -- the 柜 in 上柜公司.  柜 means cupboard, cabinet, wardrobe, or shop counter. So, the difference in the English-language and Chinese-language versions is that the in Chinese the counter is in a shop, while the English doesn’t specify the trades take place in a shop.
