5 Japanese Words from this Week's News

今週のニュースから五つ日本語の言葉

The technology, telecommunication and finance terms selected for this weeks vocabulary expansion exercise come from the Bank of Japan, NEC, Fujitsu, NTT Docomo, and Softbank. The notes expand on 2 terms of the week and make use of Softbank's Fiscal Year 3rd Quarter presentation to present a few more finance terms from the telecoms company.

Notes:
During the week Softbank's subsidiaries declared a dividend (配当). As such it seemed an opportune time to review Softbank's 3QFY2014 earnings announcement (English | 日本語 ) to learn another 10 more terms from page 8 of the presentation. The great thing is that translation of terms may be done mostly through a stare-and-compare of the table from page 8.

  • A non-executive director (非执行董事) may be compared with an executive director (执行董事).
  • Taiwan's National Communication Commission used the term 資訊長 for Chief Information Officer (CIO). However, mainland press releases tend to use 首席信息官 (shǒuxí xìnxī guān) for CIO. Here are several more C-level positions and their translations.
